A group of Friends First staff volunteers have travelled to Uganda every year for the past four years to construct and develop a Learning Centre in the Nurture Africa campus in Nansana. This meaningful project has been developed year on year since 2014.
After returning from the 2017 trip one of the volunteers commented “From the first time we travelled out there four years ago there’s an entire section to the campus that has been funded and developed by Friends First. The basis of the entire youth programme is now centred on the Friends First Learning Centre.” He went on to say “There’s definitely a Friends First legacy out there. The resources and materials provided by Friends First are top quality and the legacy is carried through to each new batch of students by the Friends First volunteers visiting Uganda every year and teaching the students and teachers the skills to use the resources provided.”
The percentage of children who go on to complete Secondary School in Uganda is very low at just 18%. This programme targets children who did not get a secondary education by teaching them IT skills and allowing them to specialise in a vocation of tailoring or hairdressing.
The students who benefitted from the classes and facilities were hugely appreciative of the help given to them and extremely eager to learn. Many of the students would wait outside before the classes began and stay behind afterwards to go over everything they had learned that day. This made the job enjoyable and unbelievably rewarding with one of volunteers commenting “It truly was a once in a lifetime experience and it is safe to say that the memories created will last a lifetime.”
Speaking about her experience with the students one of the volunteers noted “One of the most important things I learned was that the intelligence and creativity of the children was beyond measure but that they just did not have the opportunity or the money to attend secondary school to develop their natural abilities. At the end of just two weeks the progression was astounding.”
CSR and Friends First
Lessons for Life is one of three charity partners supported by Friends First. Other partners include supporting a number of cancer causes and Aware. The aim of the partnership is to promote mutually beneficial engagement and support between the charity and Friends First, which includes fund raising and staff volunteering to work with the selected charities.
Friends First believes that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not just a function or department but a philosophy integrated into our company. It is how we operate our business and stems directly from our core values.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved with the 2017 trip to Uganda.
