I’m a qualified nurse working in the insurance industry for the past ten years. I work with people who have recently claimed on their income protection insurance policies to help identify ways to assist them in their recovery.
I’ve provided support and assistance to almost 1,000 individuals over the last 10 years, particularly those suffering from orthopaedic and mental health illnesses, which are 2 of the top 5 reasons people need to claim on their income protection insurance.
Consequently I see the importance of early intervention first hand and how having access to the right type of support can be vital to recovery. Whether it’s having access to rehabilitation options such as physiotherapy, or counselling & cognitive behavioural therapies – getting support early can make a huge difference to an individual’s recovery time.
Every individual situation is different but the body has an amazing ability to repair itself after a serious illness or injury. Many studies also show work is generally very good for you and can help you lead a healthier life. Long periods of inactivity and isolation can have a negative impact on your physical, psychological and social health, as well as your general wellbeing.
When I go to meet many of our income protection claimants, they will quite often just wish to get back on their feet and try to get back to leading as normal a life as possible and we’re here to help them do that in whatever way we can.
Early intervention is often the key to a successful recovery when illness or injury strikes. There are a number of things you can do for yourself at an early stage:
- Don’t neglect nutrition – eat healthy natural foods – these will help give your body the nutrients it needs to make it stronger.
- Make sleep a priority – get a minimum of 7 or 8 hours sleep per night. It’s your body’s time to recover.
- Keep moving – some form of exercise/movement depending on what you can do. Little steps each day.
- Positive motivation – Try to stay positive and make little daily or weekly goals that are achievable for you.
A lot of income protection plans will provide you with early intervention assistance yet many people are just not aware of it.
